What is RAPP Lab?
RAPP Lab is a three-year EU-funded research project supported by the ERASMUS+ programme "Strategic Partnerships". RAPP stands for “Reflection-based Artistic Professional Practice” and the project will be taken forward through a series of multi-national encounters described as Labs. The project brings together the artistic research expertise of seven partner institutions – conservatories in Oslo, Tallinn, Rome and Vienna as well as the Orpheus Instituut Ghent and the AEC – under the direction and initiative of the Hochschule for Music and Dance Cologne.
What does RAPP Lab do?
RAPP Lab explores how the reflective methodologies of artistic research empower musicians to creatively respond to the economic-cultural environment with which they are confronted. During the course of experimental, thematically and methodologically differentiated artistic research labs, advanced music students will have the opportunity to try out new teaching & learning formats. Informed by artistic research, such approaches build on and extend specialized artistic study programmes to explore new modes of knowledge production. Findings from the Labs will be used to generate and refine a structured concept for the implementation of artistic research paradigms within the learning and teaching programmes at music academies. Gaining new knowledge through reflectiveness and critical thinking empowers students, graduates and teachers in their art-making but also helps them to develop new economic and cultural roles and, as a consequence, to widen and increase students’ future cultural participation.

Entwicklung neuer Lern- und Lehrmodelle aus der künstlerischen Forschung: das EU-Projekt RAPP Lab ist gestartet
RAPP Lab ist ein über drei Jahre angelegtes Forschungsprojekt, das im ERASMUS+ Programm "Strategische Partnerschaften" von der EU gefördert wird. RAPP steht für "Reflection-based Artistic Professional Practice" und wird als eine Reihe von multinationalen Begegnungen („Labs“) durchgeführt. Das Projekt bündelt die künstlerische Forschungskompetenz von insgesamt sieben Partnerinstitutionen unter der Leitung und Initiative der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. Darüberhinaus beteiligt sind die Musikhochschulen in Oslo, Tallinn, Rom und Wien sowie das Orpheus Institut Gent und der AEC (Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen).
RAPP Lab erforscht, wie die reflektierenden Methoden künstlerischer Forschung Musiker*innen befähigen, kreativ auf das beruflich-kulturelle Umfeld zu reagieren, mit dem sie konfrontiert sind. Im Rahmen von experimentellen, thematisch und methodisch unterschiedlichen künstlerischen Forschungslaboren erhalten fortgeschrittene Musikstudierende die Möglichkeit neue Lehr- und Lernformate auszuprobieren.
Informiert durch künstlerische Forschung ergänzen die hier entwickelten Ansätze bisherige künstlerische Studienprogrammen um neue Modi der Wissensproduktion. Die Erkenntnisse aus den Labs werden genutzt, um ein strukturiertes Konzept für die Implementierung von künstlerischen Forschungsparadigmen innerhalb der Lern- und Lehrprogramme an Musikhochschulen zu entwickeln und zu verfeinern. Die Entfaltung neuen Wissens durch Reflexion und kritisches Denken befördert Studierende in ihrer künstlerischen Entwicklung, verhilft ihnen aber auch, neue berufliche und kulturelle Wege zu etablieren und als Folge davon ihre zukünftige kulturelle Teilhabe zu vergrößern.
